The ‘building blocks’ of protein are called amino acids. In Phenylketonuria (PKU), due to the lack of an enzyme the body cannot properly deal with the amino acid phenylalanine. Therefore, people with PKU need to severely restrict the amount of protein eaten.

A key element in the management of PKU is the use of PKU formula, which provides all the amino acids found in protein but with little or no phenylalanine. PKU formulas support adequate intake of protein in combination with the small allowance of regular dietary protein.
