Organic Acidemias
The ‘building blocks’ of protein are called amino acids. Organic Acidemias include Methylmalonic Acidemia, Propionic Acidemia (MMA/PA) and Glutaric Acidemia Type 1 (GA). In MMA/PA, the body cannot properly deal with the amino acids methionine, threonine, valine, isoleucine. In GA 1, the body cannot properly deal with the amino acids lysine and tryptophan. Therefore, people with MMA/PA or GA need to restrict the amount of protein eaten.
The management of MMA/PA may involve the use of formulas which provide all the amino acids found in protein but no methionine, threonine or valine and only a small quantity of isoleucine. The management of GA 1 may involve the use of formulas which provide all the amino acids found in protein but no lysine and only a small quantity of tryptophan.
If indicated, formulas for the management of Organic Acidemias support adequate intakes of protein in combination with the individual's allowance of regular dietary protein.
